What Happens When Learning Can’t Reach the Learners?
In many parts of Nigeria, STEM education remains a privilege of geography. Students in rural or underserved communities often go without access to hands-on science experiences, creative problem-solving opportunities, or even basic resources. Rainstorms cancel classes. Transportation is unreliable. Classrooms rely on chalk, not circuits.
Dr. Oluwakemi Olurinola, an educator, innovator, and now Thinkering Fellow, decided to do something about it.
Her capstone project, STEM Safari Express, flips the conventional outreach model by putting science and technology directly on the road. Instead of busing children to a central location, the Safari will bring interactive STEM education to them, delivered via a mobile lab outfitted in a van designed for reach, resilience, and relevance.
STEM on Wheels, Equity in Motion
The concept is as powerful as it is practical:
If the children can't come to STEM, STEM will come to the children.
This mobile model allows Dr. Olurinola’s team to:
Reach more students in a wider range of communities
Circumvent weather and infrastructure barriers
Deliver hands-on learning grounded in local context
Engage students at early stages—before cultural narratives push girls away from STEM
Provide ongoing mentorship and visibility into career pathways
The mobile format also allows her to integrate lessons aligned with existing curriculum while introducing cutting-edge tools like robotics and maker materials—resources that are often entirely absent from traditional classrooms.
A Clear Ask, A Powerful Vision
While Dr. Olurinola has run successful outreach programs in the past, they’ve been limited by logistics, access, and weather. The next phase is clear: secure and retrofit a used van to create a low-cost, high-impact mobile lab that can travel from community to community.
She estimates a range of $12,000–14,000 USD for a used vehicle and basic setup, with additional resources required for equipment and program expansion.
“We’re already doing the work. This van will just help us reach more children—more effectively, more consistently, and with more joy.” — Dr. Oluwakemi Olurinola
She’s already building partnerships, including with STEM Wonders, a U.S.-based organization supporting programming, materials, and strategy. With the Thinkering community’s help, this project will launch as a replicable model for mobile STEM learning in other regions and countries.
From Outreach to Impact
The STEM Safari Express isn’t just about science—it’s about agency. It’s about representation. It’s about the joy that comes when students—especially girls—see themselves as builders, designers, and problem-solvers.
By meeting students where they are, Dr. Olurinola is changing where they believe they can go.
