Most educators already know this. They see it every day when a child explains a math idea with blocks before they can write the equation, when a preschooler builds a zoo and suddenly begins sorting animals by habitat, or when a group of second graders uses a rainy day as a starting point to compare weather, talk about the seasons, and measure how much rain has fallen.

The challenge is not believing in play, finding the time, the energy, and the right idea in the exact moment when the classroom needs it.

Teachers are constantly making instructional decisions in real time. A lesson finishes ten minutes early, a seasonal theme suddenly connects to something students noticed outside, or a child asks a question about animals, weather, numbers, patterns, shapes, or the story they just read. These moments are powerful, but they are also easy to miss when educators are stretched thin by planning, documentation, differentiation, and the daily pace of classroom life.

As I’ve begun building my work at Sticks Not Clicks, I’ve seen all of this become even more meaningful, designed to give teachers more usable, responsive, play-based ideas so children can spend more time learning through movement, imagination, collaboration, and hands-on exploration. The big “ah-ha” here is that play should not be something teachers squeeze in after the real lesson. For young learners, play is often the lesson, taking physical, social, and imaginative form.

Research and classroom experience increasingly point to the same conclusion: play and learning are not opposites. NAEYC describes the divide between “play versus learning” as a false dichotomy and emphasizes that playful learning can support development across domains and content areas when teachers connect learning goals to children’s play. Harvard’s Project Zero describes strong playful learning as joyful, meaningful, actively engaging, iterative, and socially interactive, which is exactly the kind of learning environment many educators are trying to protect in an increasingly pressured school day. This is not extra learning, it’s how learning becomes memorable.

Built Around the Classroom You Actually Have

Sticks Not Clicks begins with a practical reality: teachers do not need another complicated platform that takes hours to set up. They need a tool that respects their expertise and helps them move quickly from classroom needs to purposeful play.

A teacher might need a fall activity for four-year-olds, a quick addition game for first graders, an animal habitat connection for a literacy lesson, or a calm transition activity before lunch. Instead of searching through dozens of websites or rewriting activities from scratch, educators can generate ideas tailored to the age of the children, the theme of the week, the materials on hand, the time available, and the learning goal already in motion.

That flexibility matters because meaningful play does not come from generic activities alone; it comes from matching the activity to the children in front of you. For a two-year-old, an animal activity may focus on naming, sounds, movement, and sorting. For a six-year-old, the same theme can become a habitat-building challenge with counting and descriptive language. For a ten-year-old, it can become an ecosystem design task involving roles, constraints, measurement, collaboration, and explanation.

This kind of support also keeps the teacher at the center of the learning process. In strong guided play, educators choose materials, frame the challenge, ask questions, observe children’s thinking, and adjust based on what students do next. The Institute of Education Sciences notes that guided play gives teachers an active role through questioning, resources, playful contexts, and games while still preserving children’s agency.

Why Quick Matters

In education, speed is not always about efficiency. Sometimes speed is about responsiveness.

When a child asks, “Why do leaves change color?” the teacher may have a small window to turn curiosity into inquiry. When students are restless after indoor recess, the right five-minute game can redirect energy into movement, counting, rhythm, or collaboration. When a planned lesson does not land, a teacher needs another way in. When a group suddenly becomes fascinated by insects on the playground, that interest can become classification, drawing, vocabulary, measurement, and storytelling.

These are the moments teachers are already trained to notice. Instead of waiting until the next planning block, the educator can create a developmentally appropriate activity in the moment. Instead of choosing between a worksheet and a disconnected filler activity, the teacher can ask for something playful, purposeful, and connected to the lesson plan.

Feedback That Learns with the Classroom

One of the most useful parts of our journey at Sticks Not Clicks is what we’ve seen happen after our activities, with a simple rating system. This feedback loop helps the system learn what works for that classroom over time. If a group responds well to movement-based math games, future suggestions can reflect that. If students engage more deeply with building challenges than with paper-based sorting, the tool can adapt. If a certain class loves animal themes, outdoor connections, cooperative games, dramatic play, or sensory materials, those preferences can become part of the planning pattern.

This is important because classroom fit is everything. A technically good activity may still be wrong for a particular group on a particular day. Teachers know this. The best support tools should know it too.

Weekly Insights That Connect Play to Curriculum

One of the ongoing tensions in play-based learning is documentation. Teachers may know that children are learning through play, but they still need to show how that learning connects to curriculum goals, standards, learning outcomes, or program expectations.

We’ve seen that gap close by providing weekly insights that map completed activities to the curriculum the educator is using. At the end of the week, teachers can receive clear, usable notes that help them see and communicate what students practiced through play.

This matters for planning, reflection, family communication, and professional documentation. It also helps protect play-based learning by making its academic and developmental value visible. This is a significant shift, where the teacher does not have to translate every playful moment into curriculum language alone.

A Better Use of Technology in Early Learning

A strong play-based classroom is not unstructured chaos. It is a carefully designed environment where children have agency, teachers have purpose, and learning has room to breathe. The real goal is not simply for teachers to generate more activities, but rather to engage and lead the right experiences more quickly: one that fits the age of the children, the theme of the week, the lesson already underway, the materials on hand, and the developmental needs of the group.

That is the kind of support teachers deserve. And for children, it means more moments where learning feels like discovery.

<a class="image-link image2" target="_blank" School in the UK, reached out with a challenge that I suspect resonates with educators all over the world. Her teachers were struggling. Not for lack of effort, not for lack of dedication, but because the subject of rocks and soil in the UK curriculum is, to put it plainly, one of the hardest topics to make genuinely engaging for young learners.

The concepts are abstract, the traditional resources are dry, and students sit, listen, memorize, and forget. And for teachers who pour everything into their craft, that cycle is deeply frustrating.

Mrs. Parkinson’s request was beautifully simple: “Could you build a virtual world that brings this subject to life?”

The answer, of course, was yes. But what we built together is something I am genuinely proud of, and it represents something far bigger than one virtual world for one school.

Into the Time-Lost Caverns…

We got to work. The result is the Time-Lost Cavern of rocks and soil, a fully immersive virtual world, now available to the Salty Sharks community. Students don’t passively read about geology. They descend into an ancient, mysterious cavern and come face-to-face with living rock and soil golems, each with a distinct personality, a fascinating origin story, and geological secrets to share.

There’s Leroy, who challenges students to the vinegar fizz test (a real scientific experiment, right there in the world). There’s Clayton, who invites students to get their hands dirty with a soil squeeze test that bridges the virtual and the physical.

Each Golem is a character, a teacher, and a guide, designed from the ground up to spark curiosity rather than compliance. Young geologists journey through diverse geological environments, volcanic landscapes, ancient ocean floors, and layers of sediment that speak to millions of years of Earth’s history. They help the Golems find their missing pieces, solve interactive riddles, and along the way, they genuinely learn how rocks form, transform, and weather over geological time.

This is not a video or a worksheet with better graphics; it’s an immersive, interactive world where knowledge is discovered, not delivered.

But the world is just the beginning…

Here is what I want every teacher and school principal reading this to understand: the virtual world is the ignition, not the engine. Every world we build at Aquatic Metaverse is paired with a comprehensive suite of learning resources that turn exploration into deep, lasting knowledge, all designed around the proven principles of Project-Based Learning (PBL).

Our Mission Briefs are bite-sized learning expeditions that take students into the world with a clear purpose, a real problem to solve, and a sense of mission. They are structured, curriculum-aligned, and deliberately designed to put the student in the driver’s seat. The teacher sets the stage, and the student takes the wheel.

Our full PBL activities aren’t abstract exercises; they connect the virtual world to the real world: to their local environment, to global systems, to their own lives. They are portfolio-ready, curriculum-mapped, and flexible enough to work in a traditional classroom or a homeschool setting.

The combination is powerful: a world that captures the imagination, paired with structured learning pathways that turn that imagination into knowledge, skills, and genuine passion for the subject.

What Mrs. Parkinson demonstrated is something I believe is transformative for education, and it’s something I am formally extending as an invitation to every school that works with us. You know your students, you know where the friction is, you know which topics cause eyes to glaze over and engagement to collapse.

The Time-Lost Cavern exists because one Headteacher was brave enough to ask the question. It’s now being used by thousands of students, showcasing the power of this model. If you are a teacher or principal reading this, here is what I want you to take away: engagement is not a luxury; it is the prerequisite for learning. Research consistently shows that when students are genuinely engaged, knowledge retention improves dramatically. Our platform has seen 60% higher engagement compared to traditional methods, and teachers report saving up to 40% of lesson preparation time.

Student-driven learning is not just a philosophy; it is a design principle. The Time-Lost Cavern is as much yours as it is ours. And I hope the students who descend into it for years to come carry a little of that spirit with them, the belief that when something isn’t working, you don’t accept it. You find a better way.

<a class="image-link image2" target="_blank" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/robkeanalley/" right off.
You pivot, you build, you rally, you crash.
And then… sometimes—if you’re lucky—something sticks.

Over the past decade, I’ve launched programs, built platforms, mentored educators, and scrapped countless ideas that felt promising… but just didn’t take. That’s the life. You believe in impact, you build anyway.

But I can count on one hand the moments in my career when the right people, the right timing, and the right mission collided.

And never—never—with the velocity, clarity, and magic like this.

It Started With a Seed (and a Foundation)

Back when I was running The Gardens Foundation, I had a wild idea:
What if we built a team of the “Avengers of Education”?
Not consultants. Not talkers.
But real-deal educators, technologists, designers, and dreamers who’d roll up their sleeves and actually do the work of reimagining our schools.

That idea sparked a connection with someone who’d been living a parallel journey—Evin Schwartz, founder of Belouga and what would become the Thinkering Collective.

From our first call, we knew.
We shared the same drive.
The same scrappy, relentless energy of education entrepreneurs.
The same ache for change.
And the same answer:
“We might as well team up and go big.”

Enter the Collective

Soon after, we brought in Jim McGuire, a systems thinker and strategist who had spent years designing nonprofit infrastructures and digital storytelling ecosystems. With his mind on partnerships, operations, and scale—we had the third piece.

That’s when the noodles hit the wall.
And stuck.

We launched the Thinkering Collective, not as a consultancy, but as a movement—a growing coalition of educators, technologists, creators, and changemakers bound by one mission:

To humanize education at every level—and reimagine learning in a new era shaped by AI, purpose, and connection.

The Bigger Questions

Right away, we weren’t just thinking about tools or curricula—we were asking:

What happens after the keynote?

What does human-centered learning actually look like at scale?

How do we make reflection, agency, and creativity the centerpieces of public education?

And how do we do this while AI reshapes the world faster than schools can keep up?

We knew the old ways weren’t going to cut it.
So we started building the new ones.

From Idea to Impact

In the past year, here’s what’s happened:

Launched the Thinkering Fellowship, a six-month journey for bold educators to prototype humanizing learning models with the help of mentors, experts, and storytelling tools.

Developed Thinkerbot, an AI-powered reflection engine designed to deepen educator practice—not replace it.

Built a growing partner ecosystem of over 60+ organizations committed to transforming learning.

Published tools, strategies, and stories from the front lines of classrooms—from Nigeria to Kentucky to Ottawa.

Created a blueprint for mentorship-infused professional learning, rooted in community, agency, and narrative.

And we’re just getting started.

Coming This October…

We’re launching our Fall 2025 Fellowship—with plans to double (if not triple) the number of educators involved.

We’re refining our capstone storytelling process, unlocking new AI capabilities, and working with school districts ready to pilot real innovation—not just check a box.

Because that’s what this is:
Not another PD. Not another platform.
But a living ecosystem of people brave enough to build a future of learning that reflects the complexity, beauty, and humanity of the world our kids deserve.

Final Thought

I’ve thrown a lot of noodles over the years.
Built some good things.
Let go of a lot more.

But this?
This is the one that stuck.

The Thinkering Collective isn’t a product.
It’s a movement.
And if you’re ready to tinker, to lead, to imagine—and to act—then join us.

We’re building something real here.
And the wall is finally holding.

🟣 Want to join the October Fellowship?
Spots are limited. Toronto schools were invited into a bold experiment: to think like entrepreneurs. Guided by educators, mentors, and Belouga’s real-world learning platform, students moved through weekly modules filled with reflection, discussion, feedback loops, and creative collisions.

“If you don’t fail, you’ll never be able to be successful.” – Student participant

From the start, students were not treated like kids—they were treated like capable contributors. They asked big questions. Built prototypes. Debated with teammates. Tackled productivity struggles and creative blocks. They discovered that entrepreneurship wasn’t about flashy pitches. Students stood confidently at the mic, delivering their boldest ideas with poise and vision. It wasn’t just about who won. It was about proving that innovation doesn’t wait for adulthood.

“The only way to learn entrepreneurship is to do entrepreneurship.” – Evin Schwartz, Belouga

The winning team? But the real victory was shared across the room: young people empowered to believe in their voice and their ideas.

Why This Matters

At Thinkering Collective, we believe the future of education lies in exactly these kinds of collaborations. Evin Schwartz’s work at Belouga isn’t about one-off programs.
